A digital camera is provided, comprising an image system having a unique combination of features that aid in generating creative, high-quality images. The system presents a variety of overlays, each having prescribed attributes, e.g., ranging in size, opacity, and functionality, and from iconic overlays to full-scale overlays having varied opacity. The overlays can be used as an aid in composing a live image for digital capture, either as a constant or intermittent presence on the view-screen of the camera. In an exemplary embodiment, the camera can create a composite photograph in which a live image and the overlay are combined together. In an independent aspect, the camera can include an auto-compositing feature that aids in creating images free of improperly exposed regions. Thus, a photographer can create and combine images “on location” in a unique manner.

A digital camera is provided which allows easy recognition of what images are stored in a folder created on a recording medium when viewed from a personal computer. The digital camera stores photographed images in folders on a removable recording medium. In response to an instruction given by the user (step #200), a specified image (#206) is determined as an image that represents all the images stored in the folder which includes that image, and then data that marks it as a representative image is recorded in the tag of the image file of the image (#208). When searching the recording medium, the personal computer identifies the representative image based on the above-mentioned data and displays the representative image in a manner superimposed on the image of the folder.

A digital camera system with an image sensing device, wlhich includes an image sensing device, a converter, an image processor and a universal serial bus (USB) transceiver. The image sensing device receives light to capture an analog image signal. The converter is connected to the image sensing device to convert the analog image signal into a digital image. The image processor is connected to the converter to perform a special image processing on the digital image to thus produce a processed image. The USB transceiver is connected to the image processor to send the processed image to a host and receives digital camera parameters sent by the host.

An apparatus and method of removing fixed pattern noise in a digital camera are provided. The apparatus includes a signal processing unit that calculates location information of the fixed pattern noise from a dark image photographed using an ISO and exposure time that are different from an ISO and exposure time used to photograph a general image, and removes the fixed pattern noise from the general image using the location information. The fixed pattern noise can be effectively removed while reducing the total photographing time in comparison to conventional apparatuses and methods.

In an electronically zoomable digital camera having a hand shake correction mechanism, when electronic zoom operates, pixel shift is carried out in such manner of capturing a reference image and then capturing a shifted image after moving an image capturing element from the reference image by a prescribed amount of shift by means of the hand shake correction mechanism and thereafter interpolating pixels of the shifted image between pixels of the reference image. The amount of shift is changed according to a magnification of the electronic zoom. The hand shake correction mechanism has a continuous mode in which the movement is effected by a continuous amount and a fixed amount mode in which movement is effected by only a fixed amount and is driven in the fixed amount mode when the pixel shift is carried out.

A digital camera with a housing has a digital image device (ICD) that preferably has a special shape and a flat light sensing surface. A lens directs light to the light sensing surface and electronics are connected to the ICD for capturing image data. A memory stores the image data. An inclinometer in the housing detects an inclination angle of the housing and is used to correct for various distortions or otherwise modify the image data. The aspect ratio of the digital image can also be selected. The ICD is mounted on a yoke for pivoting about at least one axis passing through the ICD plane to correct focus by following the Scheimpflug Rule and/or by collecting focus and distance information for multiple points to create a focus point landscape used, for example, to tilt the ICD to the best focus solution for the image.
